When the arch is inadequately supported — as it is in the vast majority of work boots, dress shoes, and everyday footwear that ship with single-layer foam insoles — it progressively flattens under the cumulative load of daily use. This flattening does not happen suddenly. It happens over months and years, which is why men rarely notice it until it has already become significant. By the time a man realizes he is standing shorter, the collapse has typically been underway for years.
