The medical term is dependent edema — excess fluid that accumulates in the tissues of your
lower extremities due to gravity and prolonged standing or sitting. But calling it "just fluid"
dramatically understates what your body is going through every single day.
Here is what is actually happening inside your body:
• Your heart pumps oxygenated blood downward through your arteries with every beat.
• Nutrients and oxygen leave the tiny capillaries in your feet and lower legs.
• The now-depleted fluid must travel back upward through your veins and lymphatic system
— against gravity.
• When that return journey slows down — due to fatigue, poor mechanics, or prolonged
standing — fluid leaks into the surrounding tissues.
• That accumulated fluid is what causes the familiar tightness, puffiness, sock indentations,
and "my shoes fit tighter at night" sensation.
Your veins are not passive tubes. They rely on the muscle pump action of your calves and feet
to push blood upward. Every step you take squeezes the veins in your lower legs, propelling
blood back toward the heart.
When you are standing still on a hard floor for hours at a time — which is exactly what millions
of nurses, retail workers, teachers, warehouse staff, and others do every single shift — that
pump slows dramatically. Fluid pools. Pressure in the capillaries increases. Tissue expands.
By 6 PM, your ankles may look visibly different than they did at 7 AM. That is not normal aging.
That is a physiological response to a mechanical problem — one that often has a mechanical
solution.
